Channel Letters have changed a lot over the past years. Many older channel letter sets are Neon. While Neon works well and looks great when new, the technology is obsolete. It has been replaced with LEDs. The difference is really easy to see over time. LEDs slip electric power, while Neon suchs it out at a rate about 7-8 times more. LEDs rarely fail while Neon burns out, transformers fail and wiring come loose. LEDs also can normally take a hail storm Neon is glass and will crack, or worse.
Does this mean your sign is obsolete? Yes, and no. The “Cans” are probably good. An LED conversion is very possible. And refacing a sign is also a reasonable and doable. In this case, these letters and great candidates for both of these.
Can the Neon sign be repaired? You bet it can be, and we did. Replacement neon elements can be made – we can replace transformers and rewire.
So the real question is which way should you go with your sign? It depends. If the repairs are small and you are 12 months from moving? Repair and be happy. If the quotation for an LED conversion or a reface starts to approach the cost of the repair – convert and forgo the repair.
