Signs for San Diego, a sign company located at 3800 Oceanic Drive 116, Oceanside, CA 92056, sponsored 23 runners including 17 high school girls from Oceanside with shirts on Saturday.
The young athletes all completed the race. Many were students from Martin Luther King Middle School and El Camino High School Track Teams. The teens competed in the 14 – 19 year old category and took first, second, fourth and fifth place in that category. Taylor Shelgosh finished first in 30 minutes and 42 seconds , Alex Hernandez finished 2nd, Ilona Malinovska finished 4th and Marissa Horton finished 5th with a 31 minute 26second time.
The boot camp challenge is a 5k race with the same obstacles Marine recruits run in basic training. The course is monitored by the same drill instructors (DIs) and they “urge” the runners on commanding in rapid-fire voices. The colorful inspiration. "Run, Run , It’s a race, get up and move" is bellowed out of the DIs.
More than 2,000 civilians raced in all age categories. The ladies won “bragging rights” for finishing a three-mile obstacle course designed for recruits at the boot camp here in San Diego.
The three-mile course has tunnels, trenches, logs to jump over, logs to crawl under, walls to climb, hay bales to jump, and push-ups to perform.
Basic training has been conducted on this base since 1923. It is a historic experience no Marine ever forgets. The Boot Camp Challenge gives civilians a look into this 13-week basic training process of turning boys and girls into men and women.
