Dimensional letters are in. Many business owners feel that an electrically Illuminated LED sign is the way to go. It may be but not always. There are a number of environmental and distant issues. There are times when a great non-electric sign is the e-ticket to success.
Electric Signs (LED or Neon) are best in strip malls or other buildings at night. They can be seen from cars and at distance. However if people are on foot and the distances are not great – the advantage of illumination are minimal.
In many cases indoor mall signs are better without the expense and complication of lighting. A walk inside the mall and you will quickly see these retailers without light. They do very well. Adding illumination in a brightly lite mall does not help much. The customers are also walking so distance is not an issue.
In this case Walgreens in in an outdoor area. Parking is extremely tight and most customers are walking. Also the area is well lite. There is still a need to make the sign and install it, but the permit was cheaper, the sign was cheaper and the install was cheaper too. If they had opted for illumination the added effect would have been minimal.
In many cases business parks are also 3D signs or dimensional letters. These businesses are open during daylight hours. There is little to no business in the dark and the reason for illumination is just not there.
